The 11th Annual Lefthand Canyon Cleanup happened on May 5th this year. The weather was great, and we had 174 volunteers. The trash level this year was actually less than in the past. The lower “No Shooting” signs and the Forest Service personnel presence has continued to keep the shooting outside of the illegal shooting area.
The Western Disposal dumpster was once again on site as we started the cleanup. The majority of the trash was at the legal shooting area that is just at the entrance to Carnage Canyon. Because we had so little to clean up, a crew was put together to go up to the next shooting area, about a mile up the road, and begin hauling trash down from there.
This year our trash compactor was a back hoe donated by Nixcavating of Longmont Colorado. Richard Boddy, a member of the Trailridge Runners 4WD Club, was the operator for the day. The trash being hauled down by the volunteers who brought trucks was quickly unloaded into the front bucket and deposited into the dumpster.
Once again lunch was supplied by the NCTR motorcycle riders, which is a great treat for the volunteers. At the end of the project we had filled the dumpster, and returned the Lefthand area to a cleaner condition.
Thanks to all the volunteers who donated their time, trucks, fuel, expertise and continued support to help protect our public access to public lands by volunteering.
