12th Annual Lefthand Canyon Cleanup

[Note: Lefthand Canyon is north of Boulder, Colorado and west of Longmont, Colorado in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.]

The 12th annual Lefthand Canyon Cleanup was held May 2nd at the usual site at the entrance to the Lefthand Canyon recreation area. This year the turnout was down a little, probably due to the great weather. The cleanup area was in very good shape this year. There was very little trash along the start of FDR286. Most of the work was done at the entrance to Carnage Canyon (286.A) where shooting is not prohibited.

This year the Boulder Ranger district purchased an additional dumpster for the cleanup. The amount of trash along FDR286 was not even enough to fill the first dumpster, donated by Western Disposal. We coordinated trucks and crew to go one mile up Cnty 94 to another shooting area and clean up the debris there. The material be hauled down finished filling up the first dumpster.

Lunch was provided and prepared by NCTR members this year. They had plenty to go around. Discussion on cleaning the other shooting area on Cnty 94 took place during lunch. Most were in agreement that the cleanup efforts of the motorized community were to keep the 4WD roads and motorized trails in the Lefthand area open. The other shooting area does not afford any motorized access to public lands. It was determined that cleanup of that area was not of interest to most of the participants. Next year the focus will be on the lower entrance of FDR286, the upper meadow, and the Five Points area.

Thanks to all the volunteers who donated their time, trucks, fuel, expertise and continued support to help protect our public access to public lands by volunteering.
